The 1st Taiwan-Maryland Higher Education Conference and the 5th Taiwan-Florida Higher Education Conference were held on August 23rd and 26th respectively. The delegation of Taiwan including FICHET and 11 universities led by Dr. Pi-twan Huang, Deputy Minister of Education attended the conferences.
In terms of Taiwan-Maryland Higher Education Conference, the total number of participants from both sides reached around 80. The participating institutions from Taiwan included Ministry of Education, Taiwan, Taipei Economic & Cultural Representative Office in the U.S.A., FICHET, National University of Tainan, Asia University, Soochow University, Tunghai University, Nan Hua University, Kaohsiung Medical University, Tamkang University, Taipei Medical University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. During the conference, FICHET signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Maryland Independent College and University Association, which was an important step for a concrete cooperation between the two institutions. In addition, National University of Tainan and Soochow University signed a MOU with Salisbury University and Towson University respectively to strengthen the collaboration between the two universities. The discussion topics in the conference included “Overviews of Maryland and Taiwan Higher Education Systems,” “Taiwan-Maryland Educational Partnership Experiences,” and “Exploring Taiwan-Maryland Campus Collaboration Possibilities.”
In terms of Taiwan-Florida Higher Education Conference, it brought altogether 120 presidents, vice presidents and deans of international affairs from both sides. The participating institutions from Taiwan included Ministry of Education, Taiwan, Taipei Economic & Cultural Representative Office in the U.S.A., FICHET, National Cheng Kung University, National University of Tainan, Chung Yuan Christian University, Asia University, Tunghai University, Kaohsiung Medical University, Tamkang University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The keynote speech was given by Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, Chairperson of FICHET and President of Tamkang University with the topic of “International Collaboration Strategy of Higher Education in Taiwan.” The speech gave a comprehensive introduction to Taiwan’s higher education and government’s strategies on higher education of Taiwan. The discussion topics in the conference included “How Does Accreditation and Assessment of Outcomes Play the Role in the Transformation of Higher Education in the Technological Millennium in Taiwan & Florida,” “Educational Research and Services: Bridges of University Outreach to Business and Government Community,” “International Academic Resources Administration (IARA): The Tenacious Art of Seeking, Knocking and Asking for External Resources to Enhance the Quality of Teaching and Research in Independent Colleges and Universities,” and “Recruitment, Retention and Resources: How Can Independent Colleges and Universities Sustain Continuing Success and Improve Quality Enhancement Outcomes (QEO) in a Time of Fierce Marketing & Promotion Competitions.” During the conference, National University of Tainan signed a MOU with St. Thomas University, the host university of this year’s conference.
