International Education and Resource Network, USA (iEARN, USA) and iEARN Taiwan share the same ideal—to encourage young people to promote world peace through establishing mutual understanding via language exchange. iEARN USA selects five students who aim to study Chinese in Taiwan. They are Carolyn McKenzie Andrews from Nashville, Tennesse, Nora Christine Benson form Chicago, Illinois, Benjamin Charles Ferrone from Baltimore, Maryland, Brandon Douglas Johnson from North Caroline, and Katherine Eugene Lattman for South Caroline. And iEARN Taiwan collaborates with Wenzao Urisline College of Languages and arranges them to study Chniese at the college. Furthermore, the Department of State provides scholarships to the students to cover their tuition, fees, and living expense.
Those students arrived in Taiwan on August 18, 2011 and then attended National Security Language Initiative-Youth (NSLI-Y) Chinese learning opening ceremony and press conference next morning. Mr. Gary Oba (the director of American Institute in Taiwan, Kaohsiung Branch), Mr. Ryan Roberts (American Culture Center), and Dr. Chinh-Hwa Tsai (the director of Education Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government) were all presented as honorable guests to witness this historical moment.
In addition to regular courses, those students will have opportunity to experience rich and diverse Taiwanese culture. They will also participate with Wenzao students to practice service education—to help them to establish deeper connection with local communities and to develop students’ sound character as they serve people in need.
Their courses will begin on August 22, 2011 and schedule to finish in June 2011.
