- Opening of KMU-Tohoku U Joint Research Laboratory for Dental Materials and Medical Devices
Since Tohoku University School of Dentistry and Kaohsiung Medical University School of Dentistry became partner schools in 2018, we have completed a lot of bilateral activities such as research conferences and fellows/students exchange programs. We have the spirit of the common idea of the development of innovative research in dental materials and medical devices. Also, we would like to establish a platform for industry-academia-government to global society. Therefore, the MOU on Organization of the Liaison Offices were signed in late 2019 to deepen the partnership between our two schools. Now, a joint research laboratory is opened in KMU on Feb. 24th, 2020. The joint laboratory can provide an excellent environment and infrastructure for accelerating joint research projects and transfer the results from laboratory to industry. It is an important milestone for research cooperation. We look forward to taking the next steps and doing research together toward our common goal of advanced oral health science.
In recent years, KMU has continued to improve in teaching innovation and internationalization. KMU has adopted digital and realistic teaching materials which effectively enhance the learning performance of students’ clinical skills. In order to expand students’ international horizons and continue to increase the opportunities of the international internship, we are dedicated to cultivate and nourish industrial R & D talents. In 2019 KMU successfully assisted the dental cooperation with Chulalongkorn University to carried out the first international clinical trial using MIT implant, which was a big leap for opening up MIT medical devices’ reputation.
Tohoku University School of Dentistry and KMU College of Dentistry have completed many accomplishments, including invited Dean Keiichi Sasaki and Professor Guang Hong and Professor Tetsu Takahashi of Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry to share research topics to the 2018 and 2019, International Symposium of the 10th and 11th Research Day. Furthermore, fifth-grade of KMU dental school students can join the clinical training program in Tohoku University on every winter break started in 2019.
In 2011, the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry established Liaison Center for Innovative Dentistry. The purpose of the liaison center is to cooperate with Japanese domestic and international organizations to put advanced education, innovative research, clinical expertise, and social contributions into practice. In the good relationship between KMU and Tohoku University, we found that we have the idea of developing dental materials and medical equipment. At the same time, we also hope to jointly establish an innovative research platform for industry, academia, government, and the global community. Therefore, “MOU on Organization of the Liaison Offices’ was signed in late 2019 to deepen the partnership between our two universities.
Now a joint research laboratory was established in KMU on February 24, 2020. This joint laboratory provides a good research environment and infrastructure so that teachers on both sides can conduct cooperative research, stimulate the acquisition of joint research results, and able to put results from the laboratory into practice for the industry. This is important progress in the research cooperation between the two universities. We have proposed a new research cooperation plan with the government and look forward to a new joint research laboratory where both parties can achieve good results in research and industry-university cooperation and achieve the common goal of promoting oral health science.
