【Collaboration Highlight 1(CJCU Received a Four Star Rating from QS World University)】
Since 2019, the Bachelor Degree Program in Southeast Asian Cultures and Industries, CJCU, signed a memorandum with the Trinity University of Asia (TUA) in the Philippines on the collaboration and exchange for students to study abroad. This is the very first program ever to “move the entire class” abroad to study academic courses. The duration of the program is four-month, and CJCU will subsidize the full amount of airfare and the tuition fees. There are total 50 students who have already participated in this program. This is Taiwan’s first and only program that moves the entire class overseas. It is also CJCU’s effort to create a new English learning and professional learning environment.
Being a university growing continuously, CJCU has never stopped on the path toward internationalization in recent years. Participated in the QS Start Rating for the first time in 2019, CJCU had the honor to get four-star award. Thus, its education accomplishments have been recognized internationally. As of May 2019, CJCU has connected up to 153 international partner schools, 8 collaboration institutions, one partnership with the Miyakojima City, Japan, and five international organizations. Through signing agreements with partner schools and participating international organizations, CJCU expands resources and overseas channels available for students. The programs organized with partner schools include Global Education Experiences (GlobEEs), exchange student programs, joint degree program, education internships, short-term intensive courses, and winter and summer study abroad programs.
Since CJCU was found in 1993, the student population grew from 134 students to over 10,000 students in numbers. The university has never stopped on internationalization by proceeding from the faculty, staff, software, and hardware. The English curriculum’s quality is guaranteed by the faculty’s “Certificates for English-Medium Instruction”. CJCU also provides comprehensive English education training to the administration staff. Campus signposts are changed into dual languages, and the university’s English website is also updated in order to establish a universal campus.
【Collaboration Highlight 2(A Warm Welcome from the Trinity University of Asia, Cosigning a Collaboration Memorandum)】
In 2019, Dr. Yung-Lung Lee, the president of CJCU, led about 30 members including the director of the Bachelor Degree Program in Southeast Asian Cultures and Industries, Wen-Pin Su, and the entire class of the second-year students to conduct a four-month of studying abroad in TUA, a famous university in the Philippines. In Taiwan’s history, this was the first time that a university had the capability to send multiple students to study abroad for the duration of one full semester. The president of TUA, Dr. Wilfred Tiu, hosted the group in person and signed the collaboration memorandum with the attendee of the Ambassador, Peiyung Hsu, from Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines.
The Director of the Bachelor Degree Program in Southeast Asian Cultures and Industries, Wen-Pin Su, stated that CJCU had actively planned and coordinated this immersion program long before students were enrolled. Through this program, the objective is to train students’ international mobility. Thus, the university had prepared the course design, faculty arrangement, students’ attitude and ability training for over a year. We believe that students will definitely feel very rewarded.
TUA arranged a series of lively and passionate welcoming events since the moment of our students entering the campus; they also performed dances with a local cultural significance during the initiation ceremony, everything was ceremonious. The courses emphasize in cultivating students’ ability to adapt to different cultures and focusing on the application of English ability. It also improves the exploration of local cultures and learning related knowledge and skills of the tourism industry.
Wen-Pin Su did a survey regarding the program after the immersion program. He used the first year students as an example; 27 students marked on their self-reported quantitative survey that they had significant improvements on “English speaking ability”, “Independent communication with the local residents”, and “Confidence of interacting with foreigners”. The pace of improvement exceeded over 125%. According to Wen-Pin Su’s personal observation, the result matched the aforementioned survey result. It showed that this event assisted students in broadening their perspective, and further improved their independence in different cultures.
【Collaboration Highlight 3(Continuous Internationalization, Presenting New Learning Scopes and Opportunities to the Faculty and Students)】
The Bachelor Degree Program in Southeast Asian Cultures and Industries will continue to study abroad at the Trinity University of Asia in 2020. Three more classes will be added to the program to provide students with various choices. Under the “immersion learning” method, it will give different growth to the faculty and students. CJCU and TUA have become a great team with trust. In response to the COVID-19 epidemic control in the Philippines, the presidents of both universities discussed the overarching principles to deal with the situation over the hotline during the middle of March. 23 students were brought back to Taiwan safely within 48 hours. The courses and interactions continued via online platforms; This is the example of distinctive partnership with the program completed as planned.
Other than the studying abroad program that focuses on the students, CJCU’s internationalization also focuses on the training for the faculty on campus. In addition to the “Teaching in English Training Camp”, a two-week cultural study camp was held on the campus of CJCU. Twenty faculty from both universities attended to share and explore the beauty of Taiwan’s culture together. The camp was suspended due to the epidemic, but it will resume after the epidemic is resolved. The president of TUA, Dr. Wilfred Tiu, wrote a letter in person to CJCU’s president, Dr. Yung-Lung Lee; he cherishes the current collaboration between both universities and is looking forward to extending the related projects further. In a foreseeable future, there will be more tight collaborations between the universities.
At the beginning of 2021, CJCU will select students who participated in the studying abroad program within the first two years to return to TUA The project is entitled “Homecoming: Gratitude and Greeting to the Faculty and Friends”. The goal is to continue the relationships among the participants and to strengthen the students’ educations and usage of English. After three years of studying abroad in the Philippines, CJCU will invite the faculty and students from TUA to Taiwan for a cultural seminar in June 2021. Students from CJCU will head to TUA in August to begin their proposed programs. Through this exchange, we continue to expand the scope of collaborations between the universities, and strengthen the bond a, resulting in more benefits in the future.
