National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT), devoted to promoting Taiwanese hospitality and tourism education towards the international academia, announced on Monday, November 4, 2019 that it had passed the assessment by International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE), making it the first university in East Asia to have been accredited by the organization.

With thorough preparation, National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism submitted application for accreditation to THE-ICE in the previous October (2018). After initial document evaluation and interview via video conference, the organization acknowledged the educational performance NKUHT had been delivering, and proceeded with “full accreditation” without going through a three-month observation period. Assessment Panel Auditors were assigned to perform a three-day site visit in early October 2019, assessing according to every single one of THE-ICE’s fourteen “Standards of Excellence” and interviewing the teaching staff, students, faculty representatives and corporate representatives. After the visit they presented the audit results to their headquarters for further peer review. The final decision was announced during THE-ICE 13th IPoE Forum 2019 and a written notice was formally presented to NKUHT of its full accreditation.

Doctor Li-Hsin Chen, person in charge of the application for THE-ICE accreditation of NKUHT, explained that the full membership of THE-ICE is usually gained through a two-stage accreditation process, “pre-accreditation” and “full accreditation,” conducted for a period of about 4 to 5 years. However, NKUHT already had shown potential for becoming a member by delivering outstanding educational performances and actively participating in international hospitality and tourism academic communities in recent years. Under the guidance from President Yueh-Hsiu Lin and with united endeavor of all faculty and students, the university boldly took on the challenge of completing the accreditation within one year, and the result was quite up to expectations. After having been visited and evaluated by auditors from THE-ICE, NKUHT eventually became the first university to gain full accreditation in East Asia.

When Dr. Li-Hsin Chen attended THE-ICE IPoE Forum earlier on behalf of the university, congratulations were offered by Chair & Auditor Brian King, and by Auditor Andy Nazarechuk. Moreover, Chair & Director Paul Whitelaw, General Manager Jane Gentle and CEO Craig Thompson all gave NKUHT highly favorable reviews, recognizing the university’s clear strategy and visions, as well as bright-line, specific execution strategies, all of which meet the standards of top-notch international hospitality and tourism education. The result was that THE-ICE approved the accreditation without the least hesitation.

Professor Brian King, Chair & Auditor of THE-ICE Assessment Panel, commented that after gaining thorough understanding he realized how NKUHT is an extraordinarily outstanding international university with not just well-planned professional programs for hospitality and tourism talent cultivation, but also great dedication to moral education, as well as proficient teaching staff, all of which have left him and another Assessment Panel Auditor with fond impressions.

President Yueh-Hsiu Lin mentioned that becoming a full member of THE-ICE is not merely about showing the world Taiwan has a world-class hospitality and tourism university. It is also about creating more opportunities to interact with the best hospitality and tourism academic organizations in the world, gearing Taiwan’s technical and vocational education to international standards and promoting it to the world for higher achievements.

Established in 2004, THE-ICE is a globally renowned accreditation agency specializing in hospitality and tourism education besides TedQual of UNWTO. Each year the Centre sends world-class specialists in hospitality and tourism to visit and evaluate applicant schools. Universities that have received accreditation from THE-ICE are mostly elite hospitality and tourism schools based in Europe, whereas NKUHT is the first hospitality and tourism university to have gained their accreditation in East Asia.
