A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT UNIVERSITY VISIT PROGRAM IN LONDON
PRIOR TO EAIE 2012 IN DUBLIN
The Study Abroad Foundation (SAF) supported by the British Council is pleased to announce a Professional Development Program (PDP) Host University Visit London 2012. This PDP is offered as part of the commitment by the British Council and SAF to further the professional development opportunities available to our international education colleagues in Asia. Participants from Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea will enjoy opportunities to discuss issues concerning developments in UK higher education, student mobility, transfer credit, international career development programs (ICDPs), and related issues with their UK international education colleagues.
The SAF-British Council supported PDP London 2012 will take place September 8-12 in advance of the EAIE Conference in Dublin, Ireland. The 2012 PDP will include visits to:
The British Council:  For the Academic Year 2010-2011, 298,110 international non-EU students enrolled at British universities, and the British Council (http://www.britishcouncil.org/new/) is the main UK organization ensuring that prospective international students and international universities have access to the information they need to understand and fully engage with UK higher education. The initial mission of the British Council is still applicable today:promoting abroad a wider appreciation of British culture and civilization by encouraging cultural, educational and other interchanges between the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The British Council has been supportive of SAF since our founding, and during the PDP London 2012 they have graciously offered to partly fund our costs and provide a delegation luncheon at their London Headquarters. The Foundation for International Education (FIE):  The Foundation for International Education (http://www.fie.org.uk/) is a London-based non-profit educational organization established in 1998 that specializes in the design and management of study abroad and internship programs in Europe. Each semester approximately 400 students enroll in FIE’s London programs. Most of the participants are university students from the United States earning transfer credit. To complement the internship experience, FIE academic courses use the city of London as a classroom providing direct access to British life and culture through site visits, field trips, and guest lecturers. FIE students have membership to the student union of Imperial College London which is located close to FIE’s Foundation House. SAF began working with FIE in 2012, and our first participants will join the program in Spring 2013.

University of Westminster:  Since the Fall 2009, 33 SAF participants have attended the University of Westminster (http://www.westminster.ac.uk/) in central London. SAF students are primarily attracted to Westminster for its innovative, current course offerings in Business, Media, Arts and Design and Computer Science to name just a few. Westminster also presents SAF participants with a variety of program options including full-time academic enrollment, full-time English language study, English language study + academic enrollment as well as a dual academic and internship program in cooperation with FIE.
University College London (UCL):  University College London (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/) has been described by theSunday Times newspaper as ‘an intellectual powerhouse with a world-class reputation’ and is consistently ranked amongst the world’s finest universities. UCL is the oldest college of the University of London. Since Fall 2011, five SAF students have enrolled at UCL, having successfully met the University’s extremely competitive admission qualifications. UCL and SAF recognize that it will be always be a small number of students who can meet UCL’s rigorous standards, but both the University and the Foundation are committed to maintaining a close a relationship to ensure access for our most talented participants. During our visit to UCL, the delegation will have an opportunity to visit the memorial of the Choshu Five highlighted in recent SAF newsletters.
Queen Mary, University of London:  Queen Mary (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/) is a leading teaching and research University located in the newly fashionable London East End. Queen Mary is unique in the UK in that it offers a self-contained, fully integrated campus environment in the heart of London.  Recently Queen Mary was inducted into the ranks of the Russell Group (http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/) which is comprised of the 24 top research universities in the UK. During the PDP, participants will be able to learn first-hand about Queen Mary and the East End as our accommodation will be the Queen Mary residence halls. Since Fall 2007, 22 SAF participants have attended Queen Mary.
University of the Arts London (UAL):  The six colleges that comprise the University of the Arts London (http://www.arts.ac.uk/) provide some of the best creative instruction and guidance in the world from amazing faculty who are active artists, designers and communications professionals. The colleges are located throughout London, which is clearly one of the best places on the planet for the aspiring artist. The PDP delegation will not have an opportunity to visit all six UAL colleges; we anticipate visiting two, Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design and Chelsea College of Art and Design. Since Fall 2007, 24 SAF students have attended one of the UAL colleges and in both the Summer of 2011 and 2012, SAF has run a customized Language and Culture Program (LCP) or short-courses (four-weeks) in collaboration with UAL.Itinerary – PDP London 2012:

SAF recognizes that it is important for our professional development programs to include opportunities for participants to learn about the local culture and environment that their students will encounter while studying abroad. For this purpose we try to organize group dinners and activities at non-university facilities. On the opening day of the PDP London 2012, for example, SAF has arranged for a tour of London by the highly regarded Blue Badge Tours.
    Cost Sharing:
SAF is committed to keeping PDP participation costs as economical as possible, and to do so we have requested and obtained significant financial support from the British Council and the SAF host universities to be visited. SAF will contribute monies to cover local transportation costs not covered by the British Council and the SAF-sponsored dinners. This year SAF is asking each PDP participant to contribute £300, in addition to the cost of their international airfare.
    EAIE:
We assume that many PDP participants will also chose to join the EAIE Conference in Dublin September 11-14. The opening plenary for EAIE will be held on Wednesday, September 12 from 16:30-17:45 followed by the opening reception from 18:00-20:00. SAF intends to wrap-up our morning meetings on the 12th to allow participants to travel to Dublin mid-day on the 12th.
