Developing International Competitiveness by Pursuing Higher Education in Taiwan: In-depth Coverage of Five Exemplars in 2018

Today (24 Dec.), the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) released the special issue on the exemplars of international exchange this year, with in-depth coverage of the outstanding results yielded by five universities in Taiwan, including National Taiwan University, National Sun Yat-sen University, Shih Chien University, National Taipei University of Technology, and National Dong Hwa University. The strength of Taiwan’s higher education in internationalization also manifests itself in these five exemplars’ remarkable achievements.

This March, the FICHET issued the Call for Exemplars of International Higher Education Exchange. The abovementioned five universities stood out from a total of 40 entries. The commissioners and senior contributing reporters for the FICHET then visited these five finalists for face-to-face interviews. The interviewees included their presidents, deans of international affairs, deans of college, faculty members, and students. The distinguishing features of these universities and the gains that the participants reaped were vividly recorded through these extensive interviews.

From the interviews this year, we notice that these universities, be they public or private, unanimously believe that internationalization is as much a stiff challenge as a must, which relies heavily on competent leadership, resource commitment, staff’s endeavor, and teachers’ passionate devotion. These nutrients will be the most precious backing for the young generation in Taiwan against the heightened international competition, enabling them to confront the world fearlessly.

Among the five finalists this year, the cases of National Taiwan University and National Taipei University of Technology have been nominated for and will be presented at the 2019 Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) in Malaysia.
