The Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) and 22 higher education institutions participated in the 11th Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from February 29 to March 3. In addition to the “Study in Taiwan” pavilion, Taiwan had 7 sessions presented by university representatives to further increase the international visibility of Taiwan’s higher education and the opportunity of international cooperation.
In the past 10 years, FICHET has been leading Taiwan’s higher education institutions to participate in the APAIE conference. This year, under the coordination of FICHET, there were 44 representatives attending the conference, and most of the representatives are the Deans of Office of International Affairs. The topics of Taiwan’s sessions this year included Enhancing Student Global Mobility and Experience - Case Study of TEEP& NCP, Revamping, Revitalizing, Revisioning: Innovative Approaches to Optimal Internationalized Administration, Asian Job Market Gateway-Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP), How Can Asian Universities Strengthen the Student Mobility Program with European Universities? Lessons from NCCU's Experiences, The Best Practices of Vocational Training for Cross-Border Youths in Asian-Pacific Region, From Two Pairs to Three-Of-A-Kind: Leveraging Shared Institutional Partnerships to Create Unique Learning Abroad and Collaborative Research Opportunities, The Development and New Strategies of Higher Education in Taiwan.
The collaboration and interactions between higher education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and Taiwan have always been active. For example, the number of Mandarin learning students and degree students from the region has constituted 85% of the foreign students in Taiwan in 2015. The major subject fields for these degree students are Business and Management, Engineering and Humanities. Therefore, in this year’s APAIE, Taiwan’s higher education institutions offered joint/dual degrees and courses, high-level partnership establishment opportunities, exchange programs in teaching/research staffs and students, Mandarin Chinese programs and short-term programs with the advantage of “affordable scholarship, quality education, culture diversity and friendly environment” to attract more excellent international students to study in Taiwan and strengthen the cooperation with higher education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
